Local SEO and Google Business Profile for Your Business

Local SEO is how your business shows up when people nearby search for what you sell, on Google Maps and in the local results on Google Search. Google Business Profile is its centre. Claim and verify the profile, fill it accurately, keep your details consistent everywhere, earn real reviews and support it with clear location pages on your website.

What is local SEO and who needs it?

Local SEO is the work of making your business visible for searches with a place in them, stated or implied. If customers visit you, or you visit them, you need it.

That covers a dental clinic in Riyadh, a furniture store in Cairo, a car service centre in Dammam or a cleaning company that serves homes across Jeddah. When someone searches «عيادة اسنان قريب مني», «furniture store Nasr City» or simply «صيانة سيارات», Google often shows a map with a few businesses before the regular results. Those businesses come mostly from Google Business Profile.

Google says local results depend mainly on three things: how relevant your profile is to the search, how far you are from the searcher, and how prominent your business is. You cannot change distance, but you can make relevance and prominence much clearer.

How do you claim and verify your Google Business Profile?

Search for your business on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, add it. Then verify it, which proves to Google that you run the business.

  1. Sign in with a Google account the business controls, not a personal account of an employee who may leave.
  2. Follow Google's steps to add or claim your Business Profile.
  3. Enter the business name, main category, and either your address or the areas you serve.
  4. Complete verification. Google shows the options available for your business, which can include a phone call, text, email, video recording or postcard. The steps are explained in Verify your business on Google.
  5. Add other team members as managers instead of sharing the login.

If someone else already claimed the profile, such as a former agency or employee, Google offers a process to request access. Start it early, because it takes time.

Choose the right categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest signals for which searches you appear in. Pick the one that describes your main business as specifically as possible, for example "Dental clinic" rather than "Medical centre" if dentistry is what you do.

You can add secondary categories for other real services. Do not add categories for things you do not offer; it confuses customers and does not help. Check what categories the businesses that appear in the map results for your main search are using, and compare honestly.

Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Your business name, address and phone number should be the same on your profile, your website, your social accounts and any directories that list you. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google and customers to trust which information is correct.

  • Name: use your real business name as it appears on your sign, shopfront and documents. Google's guidelines for representing your business do not allow adding keywords or city names that are not part of the real name.
  • Address: write it the same way everywhere, including district and building details customers need. If you serve customers at their location and do not receive them, you can hide the address and set a service area.
  • Phone: use a local number that is answered, and add WhatsApp as a contact option on your website if that is how customers prefer to reach you.
  • Hours: keep them accurate, including Ramadan and public holiday hours.

Arabic and English names

Many businesses in Saudi Arabia and Egypt have a name in both languages. Use the name you actually use in real life. If your sign shows both, follow Google's guidelines on how to represent that, and keep it consistent rather than switching between versions. Your description, services and posts can be written in the language your customers use; if you serve both Arabic and English speakers, cover the key information in both.

Remember that people search in both languages too. «مطعم مشويات في جدة» and «grill restaurant Jeddah» are different searches. Our guide to Arabic keyword research shows how to find the exact phrases your customers use, including dialect and spelling variants.

Reviews: how to earn them and reply to them

Reviews help customers decide and are part of how Google judges prominence. The only lasting approach is to ask real customers and make it easy for them.

  • Ask after a good experience, by sending your review link on WhatsApp or showing a QR code at the counter.
  • Reply to every review, positive and negative, politely and in the language it was written in.
  • For negative reviews, acknowledge the issue, avoid arguing in public and offer a way to resolve it privately.
  • Never buy reviews, write them yourself, review competitors or offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews, even honest ones. This breaks Google's policies, can get reviews removed or the profile restricted, and customers can often tell.

Photos, posts and profile details

A complete profile gives customers what they need before they call. Add clear photos of your shopfront, so people recognise it from the street, along with the inside, your team and your actual products or work. Replace stock images with real ones.

Use posts for offers, new services, seasonal hours and events. Fill in services or products with short descriptions, and answer common questions in your description and on your website. Keep everything current; outdated hours or a closed branch still listed frustrates customers more than a missing detail.

Build local landing pages for each city or branch

Your profile should link to a page on your website, and that page should support it. If you have one location, your contact page or homepage can do this. If you have several branches or serve several cities, create one page per branch or city.

A good location page includes:

  • The branch name, full address, phone and opening hours, matching the profile.
  • Directions and landmarks, such as the nearest main road or mall.
  • The services available at that branch and anything specific to it.
  • Real photos of that location and reviews or examples from local customers.
  • An embedded map or a link to the branch's profile.

Avoid copying one page and swapping the city name. Pages that differ only by city add little value. Link each location page from a clear "Branches" or "Locations" page so visitors and Google can find them; our internal linking guide explains how.

A local SEO checklist for this week

  • Find your business on Google Maps and confirm you can manage the profile.
  • Check that the name, category, address, phone and hours are correct.
  • Make sure the same details appear on your website and social profiles.
  • Upload real photos of your shopfront, interior and work.
  • Send your review link to five recent happy customers.
  • Reply to every review you have not answered yet.
  • Create or improve one location page and link it from your profile.
  • Search «اسم خدمتك + قريب مني» and «your service + your city» from your area to see who appears and why.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a profile without a shop address?

Yes. If you serve customers at their location, such as a cleaning or maintenance company, you can set a service area and hide your address. You should not list an address where you do not actually meet customers, such as a virtual office.

Should I add my city or main service to my business name?

No, unless it is part of your real, registered business name. Google's guidelines do not allow adding extra keywords to the name, and doing so can lead to the profile being suspended.

How do I appear for «قريب مني» searches?

You cannot target distance directly, because Google uses the searcher's location. What you can do is make your profile complete, accurate and well reviewed, choose the right category, and have a website that clearly states where you are and what you offer. Results still depend on competition nearby.

How do I know if my local SEO is working?

Your Business Profile shows how people found you and what they did, such as calls, direction requests and website clicks. On your website, Google Search Console shows which searches bring visitors to your location pages. Look at trends over months rather than days.
